Interesting 1980 Flag Series Booklet

I Found this booklet offered on Ebay and could not resist buying it.  There is no listing of a booklet for the 1980 Flag Series listed in Scott and I could not find any listing for it in the Gaines catalog. The booklet contains 4 panes of 8 stamps from the center two rows of each sheet. Therefore they contain a the se-tenant block of four.

There are 5 interleaves contained within the booklet.  There are facts related to the Flag Issues, UN Stamp designs, Uniqueness of UN Designs, First Day Covers, and the listing of the date of admission for each of the countries contained in the booklet.

The inside of the back cover contains the addresses of the UNPA offices in NY, Geneva, and Austria. There is an logo and statement produced by the Association Internationale De Documentation Et Information Philatelique

The back cover shows the statement reproduced with the permission of the UNPA and shows the No. 9204. It was reported that 24,000 booklets were produced.

I could only find one reference to this item in The Journal of the United Nations Philatelists, Inc. Volume 4, Number1, October 1980.

If anyone reading this blog has additional information, comments, or has an additional example of this item in their collection, please let me hear from you by making a comment.

United Nations Presentation Folders

Presentation Folders can be an interesting sideline to collecting U.N. Stamps. These folders can be divided into two basic categories. (1) Dignitary folders which are given to heads of state and senior diplomats, are signed by the Secretariat-General. These folders are generally 9"x12" and come in various tan and blue leatherette styles. The purpose of these folders is to honor the person to who they are presented. (2) Complimentary folders are given at first day ceremonies, stamp shows and other special events such as specialized U.N. agency meetings.

Shown here is a Complimentary Folder

Complimentary folders were produced for Major Shows and from 1966-1977 were produced in quantities up to 1000. Shown below is the first inside page.

This folder was produced for the First Day Issue of the 1969 U.N. Building Issue (Sc#194-195)   issued on March 14, 1969 and Sc#196. The inside of the folder contains the stamps with the First Day Date of Issue applied.

Presentation folders can be a nice area to collect as a adjunct to your normal stamp collection. They are described and listed in the United Nations Philately by Arleigh Gaines.

The Chagall Window at the U.N.

The FDC produced by Cover Craft is a tribute to the Artwork produced my Marc Chagall.

This souvenir sheet (Sc#179) was produced and issued on November 17, 1967. The actual is a Key thing to see if you visit the U.N. Headquarters in NYC. The sheet consists of 9 Six cent stamps separated by Rouletted perforation. There was also a single issue stamp of the same value issued at the same time. Be sure to look closely at the cachet design because it is in my opinion one of the best for this issue. Cachet Craft also enclosed a descriptive card in the cover which describes the window as well as I could. It is shown below.

This cover is a good example that shows how FDC's with a good cachet can be an excellent learning tool about the subject and United Nations Philatley.

 WELCOME to United Nations Philately!

I am starting this Blog to write about the stamps of the United Nations and ideas about collecting them. If you have a question or some specific area that you would like to see discussed, please send via the contact form on the right sidebar.

INTRODUCTION

The United Nations Postal Administration was established on March 28, 1951. Through agreement with the United States Government the United Nations was allowed to establish a post office in New York to process outgoing mail. This allowed the United Nations to issue postage stamps in the currency of the U.S. Therefore, there was a completely new area to collect stamps and postal stationary. The first set of definitive stamps to be issued was on October 24, 1951 in New York. As the activities of the U.N. expanded additional postal services were added in Geneva, Switzerland on October 4, 1969 and Vienna, Austria on August 24, 1979.

Shown below is the 1st definitive issues for New York. Sc#1-11

First Day Covers of the United Nations issues are very popular. There are many types of cachets and this makes them a popular collecting area. A First Day cover is an interesting item because the cover shows the stamp issue, date of issue by the postmark, and has an attractive cachet based upon the subject of the issue. Shown below is an example of a FDC.

Blogs will be posted as I get the time to prepare them but if you have something that you would like to see of a question about the United Nations stamps or FDC's, please make a comment.
